Hi @sorted , What model HP Probook 640 is it, G1, G2, G3, G4 or G5? Only asking as they have different motherboards. Have you visually inspected the motherboard for any obvious damage due to the fall, you didn’t say? Search online for HP Probook 640 (insert model variant) to get to the HP support page for the laptop. When you are on the support page select Manuals > maintenance and service guide. This details how to disassemble the laptop which may be of some help. You may have to find the motherboard schematics and find out why it is not switching to the battery when the AC is not detected. It detects when it is connected as you said that the battery was charging, just not switching over when it is not there. The motherboard schematics are not on the HP support page but usually can be found by searching for (insert motherboard’s make and model number) schematics. The motherboard’s make and model number is printed on the motherboard itself e.g. a G1 motherboard is an Inventec Circus 6050A2566402-MB-A04 whereas a G2 is an Inventec Circus 6050A2723701-MB-A02. The two examples are what I found from searching on the web but yours may be different again. If doing this seems too daunting, contact a reputable, professional laptop repair service and ask for a quote.
