My Macbook Pro 2015 15” has been great for a while… Until it was dropped on the floor! At first the trackpad and most of the keyboard wasn’t responsive, but they started working fine later. The real problem is the display ‘flickers’ (not in brightness, the backlight works fine). I plugged in an external display and it functions normally. The problem is that the image on the display just shifts down and then back and random intervals, and does it constantly when the display is receiving input. Their also appear to be some random pixels that get turned on and off to random brightness after a flicker. I looked online and found that new displays are being sold for more than $500 (more than half of what I bought my system for)! However, after a bit more investigating, I noticed that if I press in certain spots on the black hinge cover, the display either freezes (and stops flickering), or completely goes black (although the backlight remains on). Do you think it’s possible that only the display data connector was damaged/loose? Or, is this a much more sinister problem? Thank you for your help. Edit: It appears that if I push down the hinge cover in a few locations at once, the screen stops flickering but still responds. Update: The screen stopped flickering! I’m not sure why. Is there anything I should do to make sure that change is permanent?

The black piece is called the clutch cover it also covers the bottom part of the display which does have some fragile parts! Take a look at this teardown MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown . From what you describe the display cable connection on the display or the cable which snakes through the hinge and on to the logic board. Clearly something got damaged and just luck is holding together allowing things to work right now. Will it stay working? I doubt it! I would recommend you leave your system on your desk not moving it about or even closing the lid. Treat it like the most fragile thing you own! That will buy you time. Now you will need to review this guide: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Display Assembly Replacement and locate a replacement display assembly as that will give you the full replacement of all of the parts you appear to have damaged. Depending on where you live you might want to visit an Apple Store or authorized service center to get the display replaced by them. But like most today thats not going to happen until the lockdown ends.
