My craftsman mower will turn over as long as I hold the key in the “start” position but won’t actually start until I release the key into the “run” position.
@noose sounds like an issue with the ignition switch I’d replace it and recheck after. Of course you want to make sure that no wires were switched around on the ignition switch.
