My 6 year old fridge started freezing everything. Technician came out and computer told him it was in the freezer condenser area. Opened up the vent area in freezer and it was frozen . He recommended new fridge as it would be expensive to fix . Ever since he checked it two weeks ago it’s been working !. What would have caused this ? I had ordered a new fridge but cancelled it since mine is working fine after a month of freezing food .

Hi, What is the model number of the refrigerator? Perhaps the “frozen vent” (presumably the damper unit) was stuck in the open position by the ice build up. This could be caused by a number of things, faulty defrost heater, defrost thermostat, blocked drain etc. Anyone of these could prevent a normal auto defrost action from happening allowing the ice to build up over time instead of being melted and drained away to evaporate every 10-12 hours as it should be. Did the repairer say what the problem was besides being expensive to fix? Did he do anything at the time to remove the ice build up e.g. run a manual defrost cycle? Did he run a diagnostic check of the components in the refrigerator? Most refrigerators have a diagnostic test program or procedure that allows for the main components to be tested and checked to make sure that they’re working OK. It is very strange if he did not test the fridge to make sure that everything was working OK before he left.
